Program Spotlight: Natural Resource Pathways

<

The Natural Resource Pathways program at Rosemary Anderson High School gives underrepresented youth access to career paths in environmental science. In addition to gaining valuable leadership and worksite soft skills, participating RAHS students of color gain a broader awareness of a potential future in the natural sciences, which is predominantly white.

In partnership with Friends of Trees, Student Crew Leaders help care for various nature sites around Portland by prepping and leading community planting events. Taking the role of leaders at these events empowers students to be in nature and give back to the environment, all while stimulating positive leadership and growth opportunities and nurturing their mental health. These young scholars also earn wages and class credit for their investment in this extracurricular activity.

Preparation on Thursday…

Students flagged Gateway Green PDX, a biking, hiking, and nature park in development, in preparation for their planting that upcoming weekend. That weekend they returned to lead community members in planting at the site they flagged, fulfilling their role and earning valuable leadership development.

…for planting on Saturday!
