Training Assistant

Location: Portland

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Reports to: Program Manager

Salary: $18 - $22 per hour

Job Summary: 

This position is responsible for assisting the Pre-Apprenticeship Instructor with classroom preparation, hands-on tasks, and trainee guidance

Essential Duties: 

  • Assist Instructor in the execution of curriculum and classroom projects

  • Project set-up and tear-down

  • Classroom supervision and management

Job Duties: 

  • Effectively lead and manage crews of students in various building demonstrations and projects in conjunction with the lead instructor

  • Be a positive mentor to young students working toward a career in construction

  • Ensure appropriate safety practices at all times

  • Assist instructor in teaching construction math, material estimating, safety procedures, use of hand and power tools, etc.

  • Conduct regular inventory of materials and tools

  • Assist in the training of Crew Leads and volunteers

  • Understand elements that contribute to successful careers in the construction trades and help   ensure that students have a positive, encouraging environment, motivating them to return

  • Assist instructor in developing new in-class work projects and on-site building projects

  • Perform all hands-on construction tasks as directed

  • Repair/redo any construction task performed below acceptable standards by students

  • Assist in the supervision of all site preparation and layout

  • Assist in the supervision of students during off-site visits to construction sites

  • Ability to be self-managed and work effectively unsupervised

  • Excel at multi-tasking various projects and deadlines; attention to detail is essential

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to draft emails, send text messages, set up calendar invites, etc.

  • Commitment to helping students overcome barriers to success in class, their careers, and their life outside our program

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent significant professional experience, and three to five years’ experience in educational settings. Familiarity with trauma-informed practice and strength-based approaches to working with clients preferred. Master’s Degree in School Counseling preferred.
