From RAHS Graduate to Summer School Teacher

Litzy Solis-Martinez's journey from navigating the complexities of high school to charting a course toward a future in law is a testament to resilience, determination, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds. After graduating in 2019, Litzy wanted to give back to Rosemary Anderson while pursuing her college degree. Her story highlights her dedication to her education and community. She embodies the spirit of overcoming challenges and inspiring others along the way.

Early Challenges and Educational Insight

Litzy found herself in a new environment during her junior and senior years at RAHS East Campus—a transition she describes as a "culture shock." Despite feeling disconnected from her peers with differing life experiences, she thrived in the smaller, more personalized educational setting. It was here that she realized the profound impact of having diverse teachers—individuals who were people of color or LGBTQ+. This new environment contrasted dramatically with her prior experience in public schools and fueled her desire to pursue higher education.

Scholarly Achievements and First-Generation Success

Being a high school student and now a college graduate has meant more than just becoming knowledgeable and successful; it is an escape from poverty, breaking a generational cycle, and demonstrating my personal growth.

Litzy's determination and academic prowess made her a Future Connect student. This program enabled her to attend Portland Community College (PCC) before transferring to Lewis & Clark College on a full scholarship. Despite navigating uncertainties about her academic path, Litzy often reflected on her challenges as a first-generation college student, reminding her of the uphill battles many trailblazers encounter within their families. “The only option to solve disappointment is success,” she notes. “My siblings are the biggest influence on me obtaining a higher education. As a child of immigrant parents, I am responsible for demonstrating the importance of education so my siblings can thrive and flourish through their academics. Being a high school student and now a college graduate has meant more than just becoming knowledgeable and successful; it is an escape from poverty, breaking a generational cycle, and demonstrating my personal growth.”

She drew inspiration from Lewis & Clark College alumni, seeing them as role models who epitomized the success she aimed for. Even when health issues necessitated a brief pause in her studies, her steadfast determination helped her overcome the obstacles.

Returning to Rosemary Anderson High School while pursuing her degree, she shows that anyone can achieve their dreams against all odds with determination and support. Her story is a powerful testament to the potential within all of us.

Embracing Teaching and Looking Ahead to Law

This June, Litzy embarked on a new chapter as a Summer School Spanish teacher, fulfilling a requirement for her Hispanic Studies major. The experience has deepened her passion for education and provided valuable insights into her future career ambitions. With plans to graduate from Lewis & Clark College in spring 2025, Litzy will pursue a law degree specializing in Family or Immigration law, with her sights set on becoming a judge.

As Litzy prepares for the challenges of law school and the promising opportunities ahead, she feels a responsibility to foster positive change and advocate for equal access to education. She hopes to inspire others to follow suit after they see the transformative power of education to change lives and impact the community.
